Fear

by Tina on November 29, 2012

Are you troubled and afraid? No, no, not way up on the surface. But, way deep down… way down there… are you troubled and afraid? I have been… for a really long time now that I think about it.

I keep choosing things that look good, look easy, look simple… like when Lot chose the well-watered plains of Jordan (Genesis 13:10). Seemed like a good thing – for him, his family, his workers, his livestock. No more bickering with Abraham’s herdsmen. No more following Abraham from place to place. Got it from here, Abe. See ya! (Didn’t turn out so well for Lot or his family. See Genesis 14 and 19 for the rest of the story and the whole destruction of Sodom thing.)

Good, easy and simple… sounds like an organizer’s dream, right? How could anything be wrong about this plan? Well, what if it isn’t God’s plan for me for this thing for this lesson for right now?

I think I might have sanded off one too many rough edges and missed the best part of the journey… the real lesson I was supposed to get for this moment. Here I am, in the midst of the good, easy and simple thing, but I have less and less peace about it. God has revealed the next step, but I haven’t done it. And, I am troubled and afraid.

All this time, I have thought I was troubled and afraid BECAUSE of the next step. I was finally really listening today. He revealed that I’m troubled and afraid because I haven’t STEPPED yet.

It’s harder, it’s not as easy, and it’s not as simple. But, it’s His next step for me. What’s His next step for you? What is He calling you to? Are you troubled and afraid? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27 NIV)
